My life has taken a really sad road lately. I’m 28, I live in a relatively new city. All I have here is my dad who’s a depressing alcoholic and a friend who is flakey and condescending.
I work as a mechanical engineer. What I do for work should be cool and make me happy but the reality is I’m just so apathetic and feel nothing anymore. I can’t watch a movie, read a book, barely even complete my work.
Now of course I sound like a trainwreck but I assure you I’m not a total disaster :) i actually just started antidepressants last week to hopefully get me back out into the world. I love to talk. My main topics are anything science related, hiking/camping, horror movies, guitar, cooking (vegetarian), as well as any other deep conversations about life, the universe, etc. If anyone’s interested my DMs are open.
I’m also open for a potential relationship but I know that’s a long shot off reddit. Anyway on that from I’m 5’-9”, white, brown hair and eyes, atheistic, some tattoos.

Solve salesman problem (TSP) using mixed integer programming (MIP) technique There are a couple of examples in the Internet of how to solve optimization problems using mixed integer programming technique. Usually the code of these examples is written in a scientific way. I mean long plain procedures, which are not ready to be applied in a production environment. With this example I'd like to show you how to implement an API that you can use in your real life programs.
In a Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) you have to find the shortest possible route that visits each given address and returns to the starting point. It is a kind of a classic problem that I decided to use for my code example. If this post will resonate on reddit, I will add more features to the problem formulation in future posts. Like delivery time windows (TW) and/or multiple salesmans with capacities (CVRP).
At our company we face much more complicated problems. We have to build routes for multiple vehicles at different depots with respect to delivery time windows, volume, weight, and quantity limits. But still this example is very relevant to what we do, and how we do.

Let's start from defining the object model.

The model is quite straightforward. Now you can use for instance google's distance matrix API to get the data.
Problem Definition Let's implement solve() method. I will use google's OR tools to solve MIP for this demo.

1 -- There are a number of different MIP solvers: SCIP, CBC, CPLEX, Gurobi. You can use them directly, or through the API like google's OR tool. In production I prefer to use our own python binding for the solver. It is more flexible than the OR tool.
2, 3 -- Float variables for departure and arrival time on vertex. For this demo they will be always equal for every vertex.
4 -- Boolean variable on edge. All selected edges will be our fastest path.
5, 6 -- Float variables for departure and arrival time on edge.
Constraints

1, 2 -- Every vertex must have one selected outbound edge and one selected inbound edge.
3, 4, 5 -- Vertex departure and arrival time definition. For now we can use only one variable for each vertex, but it is a good starting point to extend our model and define wait time at each address, which will be a good for time windows feature (TW).
6, 7 -- Relation between time on vertex and time on edge.
8 -- Relation between departure and arrival time on edge.
9 -- arrival (and departure also, because of the 8 constraint) must be equal to zero on not selected edges.
10 -- We would like to minimize salesman total duration.
And that is it. After solver.Solve() all selected edges will be our fastest path. And departure/arrival time on edges will be our schedule.
Solution Now we can build salesman path with google's directions API.

Conclusion Now we have the Model class, we can setup the network with add_vertex() and add_edge() routines and we can find the fastest path from set_depot() vertex with solve() method.
Unfortunately the problem size increases very fast with growing number of vertices.

So it is not very practical to use this approach directly in most real life cases. I would say it is impossible to solve large problems with MIP. However large problems could be splitted into smaller subtasks. And those tasks could be solved with MIP. As you can see, MIP allows you to define your constraints very clearly, so the code continues to be maintainable. That is what we are doing in our company. And that allows us to find practical routes in a thousand number of vertices.
