2021.10.18 07:18 r3df0x_556 Would using an 8" barrel on an MG-42 reduce the rate of fire?

I had the idea for an MG-42 pistol with a gearbox attached to the trigger. It would have an extremely aggressive muzzle brake to make it controllable.
It would also be cool if someone made a conversion kit for grandfathered full auto MG-42s that could be added without any permanent modifications.

2021.10.18 07:18 Amicdict I disagree with a lot of critiques against TOML. (Particularly StrictYAML and libconfini's critiques on it.)

I couldn't find any other subreddit to put my opinions in, except for /technology in which it got removed, so I decided to post it here. Feel free to remove it if it breaks any rules.
Warning: This post is long. I have many problems with a lot of the criticism (or critiques) against TOML; I particularly dislike StrictYAML's and libconfini's critiques of TOML. I have detailed my criticisms against those critiques below each point, though most of my points will likely also apply to other critiques.
StrictYAML's critique

  1. The critique treats TOML as a data serialization format, when TOML is a configuration file format. This leads to TOML looking inferior to StrictYAML, when in reality they are two different formats, so they can not be properly compared.
  2. The critique denotes being strongly typed as a bad thing for TOML. However being strongly typed or weakly typed are not inherently bad characteristics.
  3. The critique states syntax typing to be bad. Again syntax typing is not inherently bad.
Libconfini's critique Each text below the points represents my arguments against that particular point.
Point 1, 2, 5, 6, and 12 libconfini argues that since the application will just decide the data types and there are multiple data types in TOML, it is unnecessary to have multiple data types. However TOML was designed to be have values easily parsed to various data structures, so verbose syntax is naturally going to accomplish this goal the best, due to the reduction of ambiguity. If the only data types were tables, strings, and arrays, it would be more difficult to easily parse TOML files.
For example: If an application were to use an INI format, since INI files typically interpret values only as strings, the application would need to manually parse each individual value to convert the data. As a result, for certain types of data, the application would have to declare a standard format for the values, which can potentially cause interoperability issues when dealing with portable INI files. In conclusion INI files are generally difficult to make compatible with other programs, or compatible, since all values are interpreted as strings.
So with formal logic, due to TOML's verbose (and/or declarative) syntax, TOML is an easily portable configuration format. Since the TOML parser does the value conversion work, the application will not have to worry about multiple standards, and thus can have potentially better compatibility.
Point 3: Case Sensitivity The application could just treat it as lowercase. Is this a problem?
Point 4: Unicode key names I don't really understand libconfini's argument here, as they seem to imply that requiring enclosed quotes for keys in Unicode is bad (because it introduces unnecessary complexity), without specifying the reason as to why.
A TOML parser could potentially interpret an unquoted Unicode key as if it had ASCII characters (say a Unicode character producing an ASCII space or tab), which would result in having to parse the whole TOML file as if it was full Unicode. Sure TOML parsers could add Unicode support to parse unquoted Unicode key names, but that unnecessarily increases the complexity of TOML parsers.
Requiring keys to be quoted to have Unicode reduces ambiguities that the application would have to deal with.
What I mean is that a TOML parser (that only parses ASCII) could potentially misinterpret a Unicode character as a different character (like a newline or space).
9. Dates There are valid use cases for having time data types in TOML. Not only do date, time, and date-times data types make parsing date/time values easier, they also make the value clear to the reader that it is a value describing date or time, which also accomplishes TOML's goal of being obvious.
The most important benefit of date and time types is that, as @eddelbuettel describes the benefit, they solve the issue of incompatible time formats.
In languages that don't have a time datum type (like JSON or YAML), applications often use their own date/time format, which results in difficulty when trying to make compatible serialized files (like in JSON or YAML), since the application has to manually translate each time format.
  • Even if the application could support enough time formats to make the files "portable", improperly entered times will become an issue, since there is a chance for human error to cause the correct time to be interpreted incorrectly (and thus the applications uses the wrong time value).
10. Empty key names This is the only point that I agree with. Empty key names should be illegal, because there is no reason for a config file to have empty key names, since it is harder to identify information in empty keys.
14. Incompatibility TOML was not designed/meant to be compatible with INI. Even if it was, there are a large amount of various INI dialects, so it would be difficult to make a TOML language that is also compatible with INI files.
15. Immediacy libconfini assumes that configuration files are meant to be able to be human-editable. This is not always the case, as there are configuration files that are not meant to be easily edited by humans.
Also "immediate" and "obvious" are two different terms. Obvious is to be easily discovered, while Immediate is in a short time. It is impossible for a language to be immediately understood upon reading due to the nature of learning an unknown language, but if the language is obvious in it's syntax and easily readable (which is what TOML aims to be), the reader could potentially understand easier.
16. Genesis libconfini gives a fallacious emotional argument that TOML is worse than INI because TOML was made out of Tom Preston-Werner's (hereby shortenable to Tom) dislike for INI's unquoted strings.
18. Performance Sure TOML would be typically slower to parse to due to the complexity of the language, but in practice this point is moot because:
  1. TOML is meant to be a minimal configuration file format (as in it is for small configuration files). If a TOML file is large enough to take a long time to parse, then at that point TOML would be misused here, because it is not designed for large configuration formats.
  2. Configuration files rarely need to be large enough to cause slowdowns with the parser.
The homepage's description of how TOML was meant to be minimal is vague, due to the grammar. Tom could have meant minimal as in small configuration files, minimal as in small language-bloat, or minimal as in quick to parse. However I wouldn't blame the critic if it turns out that TOML was designed with a different meaning of 'minimal' than first implied, or if I misinterpreted the goal. I currently interpret 'minimal configuration file format' to be small configuration files.
TOML is not meant or designed for large configuration files; only minimal configuration files, so trying to use TOML for large configuration files is like trying to use a hammer to insert a screw; Sure you could technically insert a screw with a hammer, but it would be more effective to use a screwdriver.
Also not all bloat is necessarily bad. Sometimes enough people need a bloated feature for it to be useful to keep it in, even if the feature is not used by the majority of people. At that point though the feature would not be considered 'bloat'.
19. Human-friendly vs. human-readable TOML was meant to be easy-to-read, not easy-to-edit.
20. Aesthetics libconfini vaguely criticizes TOML's aesthetics with no basis for a sound and valid argument.
Summary It feels as though people go over (or potentially ignore) a lot of TOML's design goals, judge TOML as if it was meant to be an all in one language, which feels unrealistic to me. and hastily ignore/dismiss certain counterarguments in a confirmatively-biased manner.

2021.10.18 07:18 tylajay Dad passed away 7 months ago from cancer. Mom’s therapist is recommending meds, implying she’s crazy. Am I right to be concerned?

Not sure where else to post this. My mother, 47, is clearly still grieving. Backstory is, beginning of Covid Dad got the diagnosis, my mother was the caretaker for a year before he passed. I moved home to help her out for 6 months, as I saw it was the appropriate time frame to help a grieving parent and provide support.
I feel it is a responsibility of mine, as I told my father I would, to take care of her. I still grieve myself, but differently than my mother. I moved away a month ago, and now I’m being told she’s got an appointment to get prescribed meds. She has made no mention of this prior or talked about to me whatever is prompting this appointment.
I’m very against pill pushing. It’s my own personal belief, so much so I hesitate taking Tylenol (ok so maybe I’m a little biased). However am I correct to be skeptical? Is prescribing medication to a grieving widow normal? Even with the limited time frame? Any advice I’d appreciate, even if it’s reassurance. Thanks in advance.

2021.10.18 07:18 fae_heart123 Can someone give me some compliments?

Species dysphoria got real bad today. Maybe it's because of the moon, and whatever i feel is more extreme than normal, since it's two days until the next full moon (also the hunters moon) and i've been really fidgety.
I had to fight the urge to bite the TV when i was agitated, and Half of the time i was thinking about why being human sucks so much, then i had a mental breakdown and had to hide in my room for half an hour to calm down. Right now i'm not feeling very good either. To make it worse, i didn't have a single shift today. The only thing that helped me was quadrobics. I didn't even bother to howl because my mind was focusing too much on the bad qualities of humans. At least i'm not suicidal.
Someone help me calm down please?
